How to know if you will run out of money before payday

Running short a few days before your salary arrives is common, and it is usually predictable. Here is how to see it coming and what to do about it.

Why it happens even when you earn enough

Most shortfalls are a timing problem, not an income problem. Big payments such as rent, insurance or a loan instalment often land early in the month or in the same week, while your income arrives on one fixed day. The money is there over the month, just not on the days you need it.

Find your tight days in four steps

  1. Find your lowest point. Look at the days just before your next income arrives. That is when your balance is usually at its lowest.
  2. Count what is still to come. List every bill and planned payment between today and payday, with its date. Include subscriptions and annual charges that fall in the period.
  3. Set aside a daily allowance. Estimate what you spend on food, transport and small things each day, and multiply by the days left.
  4. Subtract. Your balance today, minus the bills still to come, minus the daily allowance. If the result is negative, you will run short before payday.

An example

Say you have €600 today, €350 of bills still to come and 10 days until payday, and you spend about €25 a day. That leaves €600 minus €350 minus €250, which is €0.

You would reach payday with €0 to spare, so a single unexpected expense would put you in the red.

What to do if the number is negative

  • Move a flexible payment to after payday, if its due date allows it.
  • Pay bills that have a grace period on their last day, not the first.
  • Lower the daily allowance for the days that remain.
  • Ask whether a payment can be split or its due date moved. Many providers agree, especially if you ask before the date.
  • Keep a small buffer, even a week of spending, so one surprise does not break the month.

Make it automatic

Doing this sum by hand once is useful. Doing it every week is tiring. DKPlanner keeps your bills and income in one calendar and shows the projected balance for every day, so the tight days turn red before you reach them. You can also postpone a payment to next month with one tap.
